SKILLSOOP’s exclusive client is the largest vertically integrated construction materials company in Australia, employing about 7,500 employees and contractors across our operations that span more than 360 sites nation-wide.
The Role
Our client is seeking a commercially astute, forward-thinking procurement leader to take ownership of our $300 million+ tail spend portfolio across goods and services such as scaffolding, cleaning, temporary services and more. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of how our client partners with suppliers, moving beyond traditional sourcing and into market development and supply base transformation.
The role will play a critical part in unlocking $10M–$15M in value through smart, strategic supplier consolidation, synergy realisation, and innovation-led market engagement. You’ll drive new thinking on how to transform fragmented, low-growth vendor relationships into a scalable, aligned, and performance-focused supply ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
🔹 Strategic Tail Spend Consolidation
- Lead analysis and rationalisation of suppliers across fragmented tail categories.
- Identify overlapping or redundant engagements and implement bundling strategies to concentrate spend.
- Establish and manage preferred supplier frameworks, tiered by capability and performance.
🔹 Supplier Transformation & Market Development
- Develop and implement strategies to transition away from low-performing vendors who lack scale, investment appetite, or long-term alignment.
- Partner with suppliers or aggregators with capacity to consolidate and synergise vendor verticals across regions.
- Promote goodwill and long-term opportunity to new and existing suppliers, enabling mergers, buyouts, or growth strategies backed by commercial contracts and forward-looking demand.
🔹 M&A-Informed Tail Spend Strategy
- Apply M&A principles to assess and unlock value in tail spend, identifying supplier synergy and acquisition pathways.
- Collaborate with commercial, legal, and operational stakeholders to facilitate supplier onboarding, exits, and integration plans.
- Harmonise supplier policy, data and governance across regions and business units to eliminate duplication and leakage.
🔹 Data-Driven Risk Management & Opportunity Sizing
- Drive comprehensives spend analysis to uncover hidden inefficiencies and value opportunities.
- Identify non-compliant, high-risk, or underperforming vendors.
- Evaluate pricing, service levels, and commercial terms to benchmark against post-deal requirements.
What we are looking for
- Strong strategic procurement leadership experience, ideally in large-scale industrial, construction, or services-based sectors.
- Proven success in tail spend transformation, supplier consolidation, and market development.
- Strong commercial acumen, with experience in contract structuring, supplier M&A, and navigating complex, multi-site spend landscapes.
- Ability to influence both internal stakeholders and external suppliers, with a focus on long-term value creation.
- Experience working with family-run or SME suppliers and helping scale operations to meet enterprise needs.
- Exposure to digital procurement tools and analytics (e.g., P2P systems, spend analytics, supplier performance platforms).
